Kent County honors cleanest restaurants with Food Safety Awards

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—Where are the safest places to eat in Kent County?

The county health department is answering that question with the 2013 Food Safety Awards.   The agency whittled down the list of 1,654 eligible restaurants to just 269 facilities, based on routine restaurant and food service inspections over the past year.  Under the county’s criteria, restaurants that earn the award must have a certified food safety manager, no confirmed violations of the Michigan Smoke Free Law and no confirmed foodborne illness outbreaks during the year.

ROCKFORD, Mich.—Art will invade Squire Street Square this weekend as a Rockford tradition returns under a new name.

ArTaste of Rockford, formally known as ArtCapsule, will take place August 3, in conjunction with Taste of Rockford.  In previous years the event has been a competition, but organizers say this year the ArTaste will celebrate all the arts that comprise the Rockford area.  ArTaste of Rockford will include live music, theater, dance and poetry performances throughout the city. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tickets for  ArTaste are $1 each and available at the Frame and Mat Shop through August 2.  The Rockford Area Arts Commission will also be selling tickets at its information booth during the event.  The tickets can be used for art workshops, to encourage performers and artists, and for food samples.  For a list of participating restaurants, click here.
