My Town: Rockford cleans up after winds topple trees, knock out power

ROCKFORD, Mich.-- Rockford residents were still cleaning up Sunday after a line of violent storms moved through the city about 5:15 p m. Saturday, downing trees and leaving hundreds of residents without power.

City police and fire crews responded to numerous reports of downed trees and power lines, which made several roads impassable. Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church held Palm Sunday masses without power and patrons of MVP Sports were notified by email that the health club was closed due to the power outage. MVP opened its doors Sunday afternoon when power was restored.

Outages were especially prevalent along and east of Myers Lake Avenue NE.

"The power started flickering while we were watching the Masters Tournament and that's when I knew we were in for some trouble,'' said Dave Schemmel, who lives on South Main Street south of downtown. "The next thing you know, the fire department is coming down the street, there's trees bending sideways and I'm in the backyard trying to save the grill cover,'' he said.

Firefighters and Department of Public Works employees spent about two hours clearing a massive eastern white pine that fell across South Main Street between Krause and Louise streets. Crews cleared the scene at 7:15 p.m.

Traffic lights along West Division Street were out of service for a few hours, and motorists treated the intersections as a four-way stop. Some roads remained impassable Saturday evening due to downed trees, including a stretch of Jericho Avenue north of Kroes Street. Limbs and downed trees littered the road in several spots. A street light in front of Rockford High School also came down, partially blocking a drive leading to the parking lot.
