Village of Cannonsburg celebrates Labor Day with its 4th annual Duathlon extravaganza Sept. 1

CANNONSBURG, Mich. (WZZM) - The village of Cannonsburg is celebrating Labor Day with its fourth annual Honey Creek Duathlon, a community fundraiser centered around the theme “locals helping locals.’’

“It is a unique and fun way to spend Labor Day with friends and family while helping others,’’ event organizer Don Kurylowicz said. “Last year we raised $3,500 for two local charities.’’

Participants cover a little more than 18 miles on bike and on foot through Cannon, Vergennes, Grattan and Ada townships. It starts with a 1.5 mile run, followed by a 13.6 mile bike ride and concludes with 3.1 mile run.

The race begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday, but the post-race celebration is the carrot at the end of the stick. Large tents fill the parking lot next to Honey Creek Inn, where racers and non-racers can sink their teeth into smoked chicken and smoked pork dinners, drink locally-made beer and listen to music from four local bands.

ROCKFORD, Mich.-- Local grower extraordinaire Jack Urben has come up with a way to sell his in-demand sweet corn at America's Favorite Farmers Market in Rockford on Saturday mornings.

Boasting the sweetest of sweet corn, hobby-farmer Jack Urben has built such a huge following of believers that he found it difficult to keep up with the demand of throngs of people who attend the iconic Rockford Farm Market every Saturday morning. In a collaborative venture with Rockford Public Schools, Urben has recruited six junior and senior student council members to staff his farm market stall during what appears to be a record corn harvest.

"These personable and enthusiastic students will be further educated by engaging in people-to-people skills the likes of eye-contact, greetings and thank yous, and money handling without having to resort to a computer or that "brain" that they carry around in their hands," said Urben.
