She developed an interest in acupuncture and herbal therapy during her family's battle with cancer and a growing interest from her clients.

ROCKFORD, Mich.-- The Honey Creek Inn in Cannonsburg is reopening its doors Tuesday afternoon, April 1  after undergoing a marathon three-day renovation.

“I’m taking it back to an Irish pub,’’ owner Don Kurylowicz said. “When you walk in, you’re going to be in Ireland.’’

The iconic pub, 8025 Cannonsburg Road NE, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with Tuesday's reopening. Upgrades include new paint and new LEDs. Some of the more than 400 beer taps collected over the past 30 years are being displayed on illuminated shelves running along ceiling beams. Kurlyowicz also plans to display photos connected with Honey Creek activities, including the annual Duathlon and a recent trip to Ireland attended by 180 patrons.

“It’s a display no one else has in West Michigan,’’ he said.

WALKER, Mich.--- A new person will be representing Walker and West Grand Rapids when the Kent County Board of Commissioners reconvenes April 10.

On March 27, the Board unanimously voted to appoint Patrick Szymczak to the seat previously held by Michael Wawee.  Wawee is charged with obtaining money under false pretenses for his own use from the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids and Holy Cross Cemetery, where Wawee works. He’s accused of taking between $1,000 and $20,000. In an earlier statement, Wawee said he resigned from his seat to focus his energy and time on family and proving his innocence.

Szymczak comes with a decade of experience as a local business owner.  He owns Jant Group, LCC, a visual graphics company based in Rockford.  Prior to that, he served as global account manager for SBC Global.

My Town: Investigators release photos of business break-in suspects

KENT COUNTY, Mich.--  Kent County deputies are trying to track down the vandals who targeted seven businesses this past weekend.

The crimes happened the night of March 22 at  Styles Salon and BC Pizza on Belmont Center NE,  Carmelo’s Restaurant on 68th Street SE, Subway on Kalamazoo Avenue SE,  and Domino’s Pizza, Hair Tailors and Panacea’s, all on 14 Mile Road NE.

In Belmont, deputies say the suspects broke the glass on the front door of Styles Salon.  The suspects also broke glass at BC Pizza and stole a cash register.

In Gaines Township, investigators say the vandals smashed in the doors at Carmelo’s Restaurant and Subway.

In the Rockford area,  the suspects smashed a window at Domino’s Pizza, broke in through the back door of Hair Tailors and smashed a window at Panacea’s.  Some cash was stolen.

 It’s unclear if all of the crimes are connected.

BELMONT, Mich.— The grocery bags at the Family Fare in Rockford are getting a makeover, in honor of March is Reading Month.

Chandler Woods Charter Academy students have been decorating the bags with colorful, creative messages related to March is Reading Month.  The students hope to encourage area shoppers to read more.

Chandler Woods Charter Academy, operated by National Heritage Academies, is a free public charter school serving students in grades kindergarten through eighth.

My Town: Rockford Restaurant Week will help feed the hungry

ROCKFORD, Mich.—Fill your plate with delicious food and help fill the cupboards of families in need when Rockford Restaurant Week returns this month.

As part of the second annual event, six Rockford area restaurants will showcase special menu items from March 24-29.  Each restaurant will offer a three-course meal or dinner for two for $25.  For every meal ordered, $1 will be donated to the Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank in Comstock Park.  Each $1 donation will translate into four meals for those struggling with hunger.

Reds on the River, which is organizing Rockford Restaurant Week, hopes to raise enough money to distribute 3,600 meals.

My Town Cannon Township: Pando looks to expand its slopes

CANNON TOWNSHIP, Mich.--  A winter attraction in Cannon Township is looking to expand.

Pando Ski Area is asking the Cannon Township Planning Commission to approve changes to its site plan.  The venue wants to add a second slope for visitors, as well as a community facility and larger maintenance building.

Pando, which has been in business for more than 50 years, is already celebrating a successful season because of all the snow.

The Planning Commission will review the proposed site plan amendments during its regular meeting March 11, which will begin at 6 p.m.
