My Town Rockford: Thespians needed for 'Cheaper By The Dozen'

ROCKFORD, Mich.— The Rogue River Community Theatre Company is giving Rockford area children a chance to embrace their inner thespian.

On Tuesday, June 10, RRCTC will be holding auditions for an adaptation of “Cheaper By The Dozen”.  The company is looking for nine children and seven adults to play the roles of the Gilbreth family, the housekeeper, family doctor, a cheerleader, teacher and “someone special”.

Auditions will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Rockford Middle School.  Call backs will take place the next day.  Practices will take place two to three evenings a week for a minimum of two hours.  The cost is $40 per child, which includes acting classes as well as a show t-shirt.  Adults who pay $20 will get a show t-shirt and two show tickets.  Costumes come at an additional cost.

My Town Rockford: 'Praise in the Park' concert series returns for third year

ROCKFORD, Mich.-- With weather warming and the days getting longer, Praise in the Park returns Sunday evening, June 1,  for its third consecutive season.

During its first two seasons, interest in the series has grown so much that this year, the event has been lengthened from twelve to fourteen consecutive Sunday evenings.

All Praise in the Park events take place in Garden Club Park nestled along the banks of the Rogue River and adjacent to the Rockford dam. The location is a perfect setting to listen to Christian music performed by multi-talented musicians and singers from area churches both local and beyond. The event is free and everyone is invited and welcome.

My Town: Entries wanted for Beer City Coaster Contest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—During this year’s ArtPrize, one artist’s masterpiece will be gracing the tables and bars at breweries throughout greater Grand Rapids.

This is the second year for the city-wide Beer City Coaster Contest, which is growing with the help of Experience Grand Rapids and Greater Grand Rapids Beer City breweries. 

“The Beer City Coaster Contest was an idea the leadership team of the SpringHill Suites North created in 2013 to celebrate the calibration of local breweries and the local art scene,” said Rachel Crowther, general manager of Pillar Hotel & Resorts Area. “The contest was a way for our hotel to create an art event, ‘ArtNight’, which showcased the original coaster artwork and celebrated the unique beer scene only found in Beer City USA.  After a successful contest and ArtNight in 2013, it was only fitting to see the contest grow and evolve in 2014 to a larger city wide contest.”

My Town: Local representative honored as Afterschool Champion

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A lawmaker from West Michigan is being honored for championing support for afterschool programs and the children who participate in them.

Rep. Peter MacGregor and Rep. Rashida Tlaib were recently honored as Afterschool Champions during a “Breakfast of Champions” by the Afterschool Alliance in Washington, D.C.  Both state representatives worked together last year to generate bi-partisan support to restore critical afterschool funding in the Department of Human Services budget.  MacGregor and Tlaib were also instrumental in securing funding for a summer learning loss study by Michigan State University researchers.

MacGregor represents East Grand Rapids and the townships of Cannon, Courtland, Nelson, Oakfield, Plainfield, Spencer and Grand Rapids.

My Town Rockford: Countdown begins for Start of Summer celebration

ROCKFORD, Mich.—The countdown is on to the Start of Summer celebration in Rockford.

The seasonal celebration will return June 13-15, marking the end of the school year and the beginning of summertime.  This year’s event will include live entertainment, children’s activities, including waterball with firefighters, a parade, Movies Under the Stars at Richardson Sowerby Park and Saturday night fireworks, sponsored by Byrne Electrical Specialists, Meijer and Macatawa Bank.

WANTED: Local chefs for WZZM 13 News

WZZM 13 News at Noon is looking for local chefs to be involved in cooking segments airing on Fridays and Wednesdays.

Wednesday’s segments will focus on healthy recipes, so please specify if you’re interested in healthy cooking.

For the segments, chefs should arrive at the station (645 3 Mile Road NW) at 11:45 a.m., and stay until the segment airs around 12:20 p.m. WZZM 13 will provide a gas stovetop, but chefs should bring all equipment/ingredients needed to make their dish.
