Men's Mental Fitness morning held in Rockford

ROCKFORD, Mich. (WZZM)- Rockford HOPE is hosting its first Men's Mental Fitness Morning. HOPE is an acronym for Helping Others through Prevention and Education.

The Men's Mental Fitness Morning is taking place at North Rockford Middle School Auditorium. It includes presentations from Eric Hipple, former Detroit Lions quarterback, current Outreach Coordinator for U of M's Depression Center, and author of "Real Men Do Cry" will provide a dynamic Keynote address!

He will be followed by three local experts discussing 1) "The Real Man Myth"- Al Heystek, LPC 2) "Biochemical Factors"- Psychiatrist, Dr. David Mazur, D.O. and 3) "How to Support a Suffering Loved One"- Gary Watson, LMSW.

The speakers will wrap up with a Panel Q&A session, and local therapists (Melissa Tower, Sara Vandebyl, and Mark Oltoff) will be available for private consultation.

Former Lion to speak on depression Saturday

(WZZM) - Former Detroit Lion quarterback Eric Hipple is in town this weekend. He's now the Outreach Coordinator for the Univerisity of Michigan Depression Center.

After losing his teenage son to suicide, Hipple now travels to schools speaking out about mental health.

"Depression itself is such a complex dynamic. You can get there from so many different ways. You can get there because it runs in your family. You can get there because of stress. You can get there because of a head injury."

He'll take part in the Rockford Hope Men's Mental Fitness Morning event.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Experience Grand Rapids and the Kent County Lodging Association have opened the 6th Annual WAVE Award nominations.

The annual awards program recognizes outstanding service providers in the Grand Rapids and Kent County hospitality industry. Nominations will be accepted from employers and guests from April 30 to Oct.7, 2013. One award will be presented in each of the following categories: Transportation, Retail & Service, Attractions/Events, and Nightlife. New categories to the 2013 awards program include: Restaurants/Breweries, Lodging, and Volunteer in Hospitality.

ROCKFORD, Mich.—A chocolate lover’s dream is coming to downtown Rockford this Saturday.

Tickets are on sale for “A Decadent Downtown Chocolate Stroll”.  Visitors can enjoy chocolate samples as the stroll through local shops and restaurants.  Participating businesses are also offering deals and discounts.  At the end of the Chocolate Stroll, ticket holders will be entered to win a sweet basket filled with items.

Rockford Farm Market set to open Saturday, May 11th

The arrival of spring in West Michigan also signals the start of the Rockford Farm Market.

The City announced on its Facebook page this morning that the Farm Market will open Saturday, May 11th, which is an earlier start than previous years.  Previously, the market did not open until the first Saturday in June.

Once the market is open, you can shop for local vegetables and other foods on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm, through October 26th.

The Farm Market is usually located at the South Squires Street parking lot off of main street.

ROCKFORD, Mich.-- Herman's Boy, Inc. invites the community out on Saturday, May 4 to experience its annual kick-off to the grilling season.

GRILLAPALOOZA will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring the family to see grilling demonstrations, enjoy children's activities, taste grilling samples and listen to music by The Rockford Aces, a National Champion Chorale Group from Rockford High School.

CANNON TOWNSHIP, Mich.—Cannon Township’s annual Waterfest is falling on a weekend when may people will be cleaning up from the floods.

Waterfest 2013 will take place at Townsend Park Saturday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to noon.  The Cannon Township Historical Society will be selling baked goods at the event.  The Cannonsburg Village Christmas Light Committee is sponsoring a pancake breakfast, which will start at 8 a.m.  Meal prices are $5 per adult, $3 for children 12 years and under, and $15 per family.

April 27 is also Save the Frogs Day.  Nature Discovery will present a Michigan amphibian and reptile exhibit.  Children can also enjoy free science-inspired activities, live music and the annual duck race in Bear Creek.
