MichCon crews repairing Rockford-area natural gas line break

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- MichCon crews are repairing a natural gas line broken Monday afternoon.  The line break forced the evacuation of a preschool and the closure of several businesses.

The leak happened just before 5 p.m. Monday in the 6700 block of Courtland Dr. NE. Authorities say a contractors working for Comcast accidentally broke the two-inch gas line.

Emergency crews moved children out of the Appletree Christian Learning Center to a nearby medical office, where they were kept until parents were able to pick them up.

The gas leak also forced a ChoiceOne Bank branch and a law office to close early.

A spokesman for DTE, MichCon's parent company, says crews expected to have the repairs done by the end of the night.

Wolverine pulls the plug on new Rockford Footwear Depot

Wolverine World Wide is pulling the plug on a multimillion dollar development plan in Rockford.  The plan called for a new retail center on the old tannery site near the Rogue River.

In just two weeks Wolverine was supposed to demolish the current shoe store and start building a large retail center closer to downtown.  It was going to be a huge financial boost for Rockford, until the plans were pulled.

Rockford City Manager Michael Young says the company pulled out of $8 million project because of the economy, and because the current store is profitable.

The new 15,000 square foot building would have been in the downtown development district, allowing Rockford to reinvest the revenue to upgrade roads and sidewalks.  The city manager says hearing th
